In the run up to the European Parliament Elections on 6-9 June 2024, Science Europe has launched our 'Vote for Science' Campaign advocating for political support for science research in the EU legislative agenda of the next 5 years. In the interests of securing this support, Science Europe encourages candidates for the European Parliament to consider and commit to 5 pledges to safeguard the future of European research and innovation.

As part of our campaign, we've created a factsheet offering a look at the state of science research in Europe, to help voters in understanding how we are doing in supporting science across the areas of our 5 Pledges for Candidates.

This initial position by Science Europe on ‘Dual-Use’ Research, was submitted on 30 April as a response to the European Commission Consultation on the White Paper on ‘Options for enhancing support for research and development involving technologies with dual-use potential’, following a preliminary discussion with our Governing Board and prior to a broader discussion with our Member Organisations in the context of our upcoming General Assembly Meeting.

Science Europe’s new ‘Practical Guide to Supporting Diversity in Research Environments’ highlights key findings from a membership survey conducted in 2023, showcases good practices, and provides practical recommendations across topics such as positive action measures and the collection and use of diversity data. 

Science Europe, along with 7 other Organisations released an open letter today addressed to Ilze Juhansone, Secretary-General of the European Commission, and colleagues demanding the Commission prioritise research and education in its ex-ante impact assessment process.

Science Europe, EUA, and EARTO sent an Open Letter to European Commissioner for Innovation and Research Iliana Ivanova. The letter stresses the crucial role of EU R&I investments in addressing global challenges, boosting the EU's global competitiveness, and reinforcing its strategic autonomy.

This statement presents some of the high-level outcomes from the 2023 High Level Workshop on 'Challenges to Reciprocity and Equitable Collaboration between Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean'.

Science Europe supports the scientific community in calling for caution and nuance in approaching the issue of phasing out the use of animals in research, and endorses statements by several stakeholders.

In 2022, Science Europe made significant contributions in various areas, including research culture, research assessment, open science, EU framework programmes, the green and digital transition, and science communication.

Researchers, research services, and other community members at Research Funding and Performing Organisations play a key role in establishing recognition systems through the research assessment processes that they implement. These recognition systems strongly contribute to determining what is understood as research quality and excellence. Based on the Science Europe Values Framework (published in July 2022), this paper provides practical recommendations and good practice examples detailing how research organisations can continuously improve the way they assess research and researchers. The recommendations help to embed our shared values and contribute to the evolution of research cultures in Europe.

This report presents the actions that universities and research organisations are taking to address the climate crisis and the challenges they face. These were presented at the symposium 'Interdisciplinarity for the Net-Zero Transition' of 3 November 2022, in the lead-up to COP27.

This report aims to identify activities for science-informed policy making, to map those funded and performed by Science Europe Member Organisations, and suggests some recommendations. It is based on a survey held among Science Europe Member Organisations and a subsequent focus group.

How to become an effective science-policy advisor? The science-policy interactions have a longstanding relationship with complex dynamics. The COVID pandemic was only one of the ‘wicked problem’, where decision-makers called for science-informed advice. This report showcases 16 lessons learnt from the event Good Advice for (Young) Science-Policy Advisors, organised by Science Europe, FORMAS and Marie Curie Alumni Association on 29 April 2022.

On 22 February, Science Europe answered the European Commission’s consultation on the past, current, and future European R&I Framework Programmes. The response, developed in collaboration with the SE Working group on Horizon Europe reflects SE Member Organisations’ opinions and concerns regarding Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.  

The 2022 High Level Workshop on the ERA dealt with the topic of research ethics and integrity when engaging with various public audiences.
