Science Communications Conference Strategic Conclusions

This publication presents the strategic conclusions drawn from the discussions that took place on 12 and 13 March, as part of the High Level Conference on Science Communication 'Unlocking the Power of Science Communication in Policy Making', co-organised by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS), and Science Europe under the auspices of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union (January–June 2024).

The conference brought together European policy makers and stakeholders to highlight the importance of open, ethical science communication in research processes and delivered the following key messages:

  1. The importance of integrating science communication within research and innovation systems, advocating for its prioritisation at national, European, and global levels.
  2. The necessity of enhancing researchers' communication skills, combatting misinformation, and promoting public engagement through innovative approaches.
  3. The vital role of science communication in demonstrating the value of research investments and fostering public trust in the scientific process.

To achieve these goals, specific recommendations are addressed to European institutions, national governments, and research organisations, including incentivising science communication, recognising science communicators as professionals, promoting AI literacy, and adopting core principles for responsible science communication.
