Science Europe Collaborates with CWTS & Know Center on Links Between Open Science and Research Cultures
Following a public call to tender, Science Europe has selected CWTS (Leiden, the Netherlands) and the Know Center (Graz, Austria) for a study into the links between open science and research cultures.
Science Europe's Working Groups on Open Science and Research Culture work together to investigate strategic approaches to, and research assessment of, open science. Their goal is to provide foresight for policy discussions and enhance mutual learning between Science Europe's Member Organisations. This will lay a foundation for the development of strategic recommendations on open science and the evolution of research cultures.
In October 2024, during International Open Access Week, they presented the outcomes of a survey among Science Europe members. They will explore the key findings in a three-part series of internal workshops during 2025, covering topics from ‘open access to research outputs’ to ‘opening the research process’, and from ‘open science policy orientations’ to ‘levers for research culture change’.
About the Collaboration
Science Europe is working together with Leiden University's Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), the Netherlands, and the Know Center in Graz, Austria, to examine the links between open science and research cultures.
This collaboration results from a call for tender launched in November 2024, launched as a follow-up to the results of Science Europe's 2024 survey on open science and research assessment. The project seeks to provide an academic context to key findings from the survey on open science, its implementation through research assessment and monitoring, and its role in contributing to the evolution of research cultures.
Scoping Study
As part of the project, a scoping study will be performed of relevant academic literature across the open science elements that were identified in the 2024 Science Europe report. This will be used as the basis for a review of how open science impacts and contributes to research cultures. It will look at the reported effects of open science policies and practices, as well as their practical implementation through research assessment processes and monitoring exercises. It will additionally link insights to key descriptors and drivers of research cultures, such as the expectations, behaviours, and attitudes of research communities.
Preliminary findings of the scoping study will be presented to members of the Science Europe Working Groups on Research Culture and Open Science during a members-only workshop on 25 June. A public webinar will be organised in October to present the refined findings, as well as Science Europe's next steps in this priority area.
- The study protocol has been pre-registered at OSF Registries.

Survey Report Strategic Approaches to, and Research Assessment of, Open Science
This report analyses the role of public research funding and performing organisations in Europe in the shifting landscape of open science and research assessment reform. The findings demonstrate how Science Europe's Member Organisations actively shape and contribute to these developments.
