Connecting Open Science and Research Assessment Reform
Good Practices for Advancing Research Cultures
As part of International Open Access Week 2026, Science Europe invites you to join a webinar highlighting practical examples from its Member Organisations that demonstrate how open science and research assessment reform can be advanced together.
About the webinar
Open science and research assessment reform are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. Open science promotes transparency, accessibility, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge, while research assessment reform seeks to ensure that researchers and research organisations are recognised and rewarded for the full range of contributions they make to science and society.
Together, these developments can help create research cultures that value quality, integrity, inclusiveness, and collaboration over narrow measures of performance.
Recognising these connections, Science Europe has brought together expertise from its Working Groups on Open Science and Research Culture to develop the Position Statement on Connecting Open Science and Research Assessment Reform. The statement presents a shared vision and practical recommendations for research funding and performing organisations that seek to align their policies and practices to support more effective and sustainable research cultures.
The webinar will showcase a selection of good practices from across Europe, illustrating how organisations are implementing policies, incentives, infrastructures, support mechanisms, and monitoring approaches that contribute to both open science and responsible research assessment.
By focusing on concrete experiences, the event will provide participants with insights into successful approaches, lessons learned, and opportunities for future action.
