Science Europe Input to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on A European Strategy for AI in Science
Science Europe submitted this response to the European Commission's Call for Evidence on a European Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Science.
Europe needs a forward-looking strategy that will remain relevant as AI constantly evolves. It should boost Europe's innovation capacity and global competitiveness, without shifting the focus away from its values-based models.
Based on insights from recent events and publications on AI, and on the collective expertise and experience of our Member Organisations who initiate and participate in the entire value chain of research processes, from call design through to publication and valorisation of research, our contribution outlines several key areas for consideration:
- Integrating AI in grant application and evaluation processes.
- Exploring AI-supported peer review.
- Training researchers in the responsible use of AI.
- Using big data to assess the impact of public R&I investments.
- Addressing the environmental footprint of AI in research.
Science Europe remains ready to contribute further to defining the European strategy for AI in science.
