From Ambition To Action: Fostering Research Excellence In Europe - 2023 Annual Report

2023 proved to be another landmark year for Science Europe: building on the achievements of the previous year and setting the direction for new approaches in vital areas of research policy.

The annual report highlights the year's significant developments in research culture, including the reform of research assessment driven by the Coalition for the Reform of Research Assessment, now supported by over 600 organisations. It covers the first Global Summit on Diamond Open Access, efforts to update the European Code of Conduct on Research Integrity, and initiatives to improve equality, diversity, and inclusion. It emphasises the importance of securing an ambitious research budget, bolstering international collaboration, and addressing investment gaps within the EU.

The report further details Science Europe's support for the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, participation in the UN Science Summit, and the focus on interdisciplinary dialogue and evidence-based policymaking. Additionally, it outlines plans for a High-Level Conference on Science Communication and addresses the ethical and effective use of AI in research.

Opening with a Foreword from the former President of Science Europe, Marc Shiltz, our Secretary General Lidia Borrell-Damián concludes the report by welcoming the new President, Mari Sundli Tveit, and reaffirming our commitment to fostering a collaborative research environment.
